dr. Béla Takács, a correspondence university student, caught his first golden jackal in January of this year in the Váchartany area of the Pest County Eagle Hunting Association. In recent years, this resettled predator appeared in an area not far from Szentendrei Island.

Local hunters shot the first individuals two years ago. Béla Takács’s jackal was the third, which received a bronze rating after the judging. The jackal is looking for its place here as well, it was expected that the migrating individuals would settle sooner or later – Béla Takács began his report.

By chance, Béla, who has a legal degree and works as a notary public, met Balázs during the second degree course in wildlife engineering, who, along with another classmate, very kindly offered to help him with the field part of his diploma work. The topic of the thesis is the application and practice of the use of different game calling devices in game management, with particular attention to the red fox. Balázs comes from Ormánság, in the vicinity of Sellye. Their common passion is hunting, and for Béla, it’s also duke hunting. In practice, the field work means that he uses different call sounds and, if he can, he also kills the predators with a firearm, and records the reaction of the wild animals called into the shooting range in a protocol.

The aim of the thesis is to test the different wild call sounds per season, to record and examine the results. Predator calls are known to be one of the most difficult genres of hunting, with furry pests reacting differently to different decoy sounds. It takes a lot of time and patience to get to know the different species.

The thesis mainly focuses on the red fox, but the reactions and behaviors of other predatory species are also recorded. A badger, red fox or golden jackal reacts completely differently to the sounds of different prey animals. With the appearance of the golden jackal in Ormánság, the red fox has almost disappeared, you can hardly observe one or two individuals, it was quite amazing to experience this. said Béla.

The first day of guest hunting ended without results. . Although he saw a lame golden jackal heading towards a row of stumps in broad daylight, the shot failed. Compared to his disability, the jackal disappeared in the covered area in a flash. He didn’t get a chance to repeat, and after that there was no more action until the fog cleared

The next day he tried to make a giggle sound. After the call, almost out of nowhere, a golden jackal appeared, which regularly scanned the area. When the predator was about 70 meters away, it fired a shot at the game. Now he made no mistake: the golden jackal, after the shot, fell into the fire. After that, he imitated the cry of a rabbit with his whistle. A red fox appeared, but as soon as he saw the high spot, he immediately disappeared. Most likely, this was the fox that later showed itself in the same place without calling, and disappeared before the appearance of the later jackals.

A little later, Józsi the Ant’s wild boar picked up a whistle. At the malachang, the forest came alive. It was impossible to say exactly what kind of animal was moving in it. The distress cry of a wild boar can also trigger the wild boars’ instinctive defense mechanism, i.e. they protect each other, especially in the places where the jackal hunts them. After the call, nothing happened for almost 40 minutes, and then three golden jackals came out of the forest. Maybe they were tactical and waited 40 minutes after the call? It can happen with the jackal, but it could be due to the luck of the hunter.

He fired another shot, followed by two more. Another jackal was placed on the table, the other two scattered in the direction of the forest.

According to experienced predator hunters, there is little chance of fooling golden jackals in the spring, where they have already been recognized. The red fox responds more to this bait sound. According to their experience, the preference for decoy sounds changes periodically, but in some cases this change can even occur suddenly. The individual experiences of hunters show many similarities in different regions of the country.

In areas where red foxes and golden jackals are regularly hunted with whistles, the well-known decoy sounds have a more alarming effect. That’s why you always have to change – because they know the hunters. It is very difficult to correct the mistakes made, those who do not develop, do not educate themselves, will be ineffective. In addition to calling, it is also important to change locations, because foxes and jackals also learn the location of high places. One of the most effective methods is the practice introduced by Mihály Horváth: staying in a given area for a short time. In this way, a large area can be combed in a relatively short time.

The presence of the golden jackal also generates nature conservation issues, since the reintroduction of the originally native golden jackal enriches the Hungarian fauna, but also causes serious wildlife management and nature conservation problems. The population of domestic predators, which has been continuously increasing for decades, can be kept in balance with planned and professional thinning, in order to ensure the living space of significant or even other protected and highly protected species from the point of view of wildlife management – university student Béla Takács concluded his report.

A 50-year-old man collected deer antlers from the forest without a permit near Dunaszentmiklós on the afternoon of March 27, 2023. Two members of the local hunting company caught the Szomó resident in the act, who was on his way home with his prey.

They called on him to hand over the antlers to them. B. Lajos did not comply, and when they tried to hold him back, he attacked the hunters. A knife was also found, the man threatened him with it, and then left the antlers behind. As soon as the police learned about the incident, they set out to find the perpetrator, who was arrested at his home in Szomód. The man did not deny his actions either then or during his interrogation at the police station. He said that he regularly walks the forest in search of dead antlers, and he also admitted that he attacked hunters who caught him in the act.Proceedings were initiated against B. OMVK : Based on the decision of the General Assembly of the Hunting Chamber, in 2024 HUF 500 million will again be placed into the National Wildlife Management Fund, which serves to finance developments for the purpose of wildlife management. In addition, the advocacy group is also announcing the highly successful Professional Hunter Equipment Procurement Program, within the framework of which this year HUF 282 million will be awarded to those entitled to hunt in the form of an association to improve the working conditions of professional staff. Report on the Assembly of Delegates on March 24.

At the start of the event, 177 of the 290 delegates showed up, so the meeting had a quorum. The majority of proposals were adopted unanimously, in some cases by an overwhelming majority. (The relevant materials   were received by the delegates by post after  the approval of the Board , in accordance with the provisions of the Statutes, and are also available on the website of the Hunting Chamber .)

Speaking about the activities of the organization’s headquarters in 2022, the  president , Dr. László Jámbor,  emphasized: the  report  provides an extremely detailed picture of the work carried out in the past year, so he does not comment on it verbally. Since no questions or comments were received on the material, it was unanimously accepted by the delegates.

General Secretary Péter Bajdik spoke about the management of the center in 2022   . Turning to the essential points, he reminded: since last year, the management of the organization has been trying to ensure that the center always has a strategic reserve of around HUF 500 million – this was achieved last year as well as this year.

Regarding the management of 2022, he noted: the financial affairs developed much better than expected, partly due to the hunting permits obtained by foreigners. The reason for this is not  the increase in the price of permits  (the resulting surplus will be realized this year), but the fact that many people exchanged them last year at the old prices. The closing funds totaled HUF 663 million, taking into account the remaining amount of the National Wildlife Management Fund and the amounts remaining due to the center’s frugal management, the chamber was able to start the year 2023 with HUF 163 million more than planned.  The general secretary emphasized: restrained planning does not increase the center’s revenues:  the portion above the 500 million reserve is returned to the sector by the interest representatives. In relation to the financial report,  János Imre,  the chairman of the Supervisory Board, said: the board he leads discussed the material, the data contained in it correspond to the results of the audit, so he unanimously supports the acceptance of the material. The 2022 management report was also unanimously accepted by the delegates.

The National Hungarian Hunting Chamber (hereinafter: the Chamber) is a self-governing public body of professional and sport hunters, which also performs public tasks and general professional advocacy tasks, (Figure: OMVK)

In recent years, the Hunting Chamber distributes its resources in a task-proportional financing system, which increased significantly from 2017 and then this year. Dr. László Jámbor reminded me: at the most recent  Delegates’ Assembly last November the management and the Board planned with restrained management, but since then, with the increase in the price of hunting tickets and hunting permits, the financial possibilities of the organization have improved further, and significantly so. Thus, it became necessary for the Assembly of Delegates to deal with the distribution of surplus revenues between the County Territorial Organizations and the center, as well as the use of the latter’s resources. According to the proposal, membership fee revenues will remain with the counties. The distribution of the income from hunting tickets – HUF 5,000 per hunter under the age of 70 – does not change: with a few exceptions, the ratio is 50-50%. In the case of the Metropolitan and Pest County Territorial Organization, 80-20% in favor of the Central Organization, in the case of Nógrád County 15-85%, in the case of Komárom-Esztergom 30-70%, in the case of Csongrád-Csanád, Heves and Tolna 45-55%, in all cases in favor of the county. As for the revenues of the Regional Organizations from hunting permits, this year they are the same as the amounts previously approved in the task-proportional financing, and the additional income from the price increase (440 million forints) goes to the center. It is important to note: these revenues can be moderately planned, since it is not known in advance how many foreign hunters will arrive in a given year, and they are not distributed proportionally between the individual counties, which justifies their centralization and redistribution.

According to the above, it will be possible to continue the highly successful hunting chamber programs started earlier, the president stated. The Center thus has HUF 623 million in additional income , of which, however, according to what was previously agreed, only HUF 306 million covers the costs of the organization, and the rest would be used to finance various projects. It is a total of HUF 952 million, from which, among other things,

  • HUF 500 million goes to the National Wildlife Management Fund,
  • the Hunting Chamber announces the Professional Hunting Equipment Procurement Program with HUF 282 million again this year  (we provided information on the results of last year’s program  in the November 2022 issue of the Nimród Newsletter  ) ,
  • With HUF 350 million, the organization finances the publication of the Nimród Hunting Magazine, which also includes the Hunting Chamber’s newsletter, which is delivered free of charge to almost every Hungarian hunter every month.

The proposals of the Bureau were supported by the overwhelming majority of delegates.

Dr. László Jámbor also said: the task-proportional funding system will need to be reviewed and reweighted in the future, but only on the condition that the resources of any Territorial Organization cannot decrease compared to the current ones, and in fact they will probably increase.

As for the Centre’s budget, the special programs are also supported from the HUF 107 million budget approved in the fall. The amounts provided for each target area in 2023 were determined by the Board, as follows:

  • “Meet the hunters!” youth education program – HUF 30 million  (Territorial Organizations can apply for support),
  • programs supporting the professional preparation of professional hunters – HUF 30 million  (Territorial Organizations can apply for support) ,
  • National Hunting Day  (Komárom-Esztergom county, August 25-26)  – HUF 10 million,
  • completion of the research program carried out in recent years – HUF 10 million,
  •  new issues of the  “Kisvadász” publication – 27 million forints.

The central budget was unanimously supported by the Assembly of Delegates.

The financial issues were closed by the decision on the amount placed in the National Wildlife Management Fund for next year  : this will again be half a billion forints . The call for tenders will be published in the autumn of 2023 on the online interfaces of the Hunting Chamber. General Secretary Péter Bajdik drew attention to the fact that there was huge interest in the application opportunity this year as well, and the demand significantly exceeded the available funds  details here ). In response to a question related to the topic, Dr. László Jámbor said that last year showed that the operation of the Wildlife Management System may be worth fine-tuning after several years, so the national Wildlife Protection and Wildlife Management Committee was given the task of preparing the work. Proposals related to the current tenders are requested every year from the co-committees of the county’s Territorial Organizations, so they will be able to formulate proposals in the same way to review and possibly modify the system. The vast majority of delegates supported the filling of the Wildlife Management Fund with half a billion forints by 2024.

In addition to the above, the Assembly of Delegates unanimously decided to amend the statutes of the Hunting Chamber, which, in addition to several technical clarifications, states more clearly than before that the task of the organization’s Center is to maintain the Zsigmond Széchenyi Hunting Museum in Hatvan, which also serves as its headquarters. This was important because of the administration of the funding.

The proposals of the Chamber of Deputies’ General Meetings and the related materials are available back to 2017 in the relevant menu item of our website  by clicking here .

After swimming across the two branches of the Danube, he ate from two goat carcasses that had already begun to decompose and were dumped on the edge of a livestock farm. On March 20, he reached the central block of the Kelet-cserhát Landscape Protection District in one night, probably not stopping anywhere on the way. After a short rest in the forests of Mount Tepke, he headed northwest and searched for the passage through the Zagyva Valley.

The Bükki National Park is one of Hungary’s first national parks, located in the North Central Mountains, in the Bükk region. (Figure: BNPI)

The settlement of Kisterenye and highway 21, closed with a wildlife fence, blocked his path, which he had to avoid, and then spent the day in the forests above Mátraszele. On the evening of Wednesday – March 22 – in the valley of the Bárna stream, he reached Heves County, following the well-known pack of the local wolf family.

Before leaving Nógrád, he also passed in front of the cameras installed by our Directorate to monitor wolves. In one of the wildlife camera recordings, the collar beacon placed on the animal can also be clearly identified. The wolf marked in Switzerland  crossed Nógrád in three nights. As the crow flies, it is 69 km, which in reality is almost 100 km on four legs. Based on the tracks observed in the field, he stopped at the scent marks left by the local wolves, and it became clear to him that he had arrived in inhabited wolf territory. In the north-eastern part of Nógrád, his movement slowed down, but he still followed the packs used by the wolves.
