MME : We carried out habitat management work in Budakeszi’s Natura 2000 habitat, the Álom-völgy, at the initiative of the civil association of the Álom-völgy and Nádas-tó guardians. The area is home to many valuable species of plants and animals, the preservation of which requires the preservation of open grassland.

The Hungarian Ornithological and Conservation Association is the largest social organization of ornithology and bird protection in Hungary, which was founded on January 6, 1974 (Figure: MME)

The employees of the Danube-Ipoly National Park Administration were also actively involved in the organization and implementation of the work. The preliminary and on-the-day field work and tools required for habitat management were provided by MME. The task of the volunteers was to transport the cut bushes from the lawn. Budakeszi Városüzemeltetesi Kft. undertook the crushing and transportation of the accumulated material.
The enthusiastic volunteers arrived at 10 o’clock (more than 50 people participated during the day), and after a suitable work safety and professional information, they started carrying the cut shrubs. Civilians active in the defense of Budakeszi prepared tea, snacks and greasy bread for the volunteer team.

The MME team held a bird ringing demonstration during the lunch break. Dávid Sarlós, in addition to the charcoal, blue and friend’s breeches, also ringed a small group of primroses. Everyone could see the little birds up close and hear a lot of valuable information. A little later, a slightly larger bird, a jay, also got into the net, so the team got to know an extremely interesting bird.

The Swiss wolf so called M237 left Transdanubia on March 19, and on March 20, during the day, on the other side of the Naszály, in the vicinity of the Farkas-Bérc spring in the Lósi-patak valley, it rested from the chaos of the Budapest agglomeration and reached Nógrád.

BNPI : The Swiss wolf M237 left Transdanubia on March 19th and on March 20th, on the other side of the Naszály, in the vicinity of the Farkas-Bérc spring in the Lósi-patak valley, it rested from the confusion of the Budapest agglomeration and reached Nógrád.

After swimming across the two branches of the Danube, he ate from two goat carcasses that had already begun to decompose and were dumped on the edge of a livestock farm. On March 20, he reached the central block of the Kelet-cserhát Landscape Protection District in one night, probably not stopping anywhere on the way. After a short rest in the forests of Mount Tepke, he headed northwest and searched for the passage through the Zagyva Valley.

The Bükki National Park is one of Hungary’s first national parks, located in the North Central Mountains, in the Bükk region. (Figure: BNPI)

The settlement of Kisterenye and highway 21, closed with a wildlife fence, blocked his path, which he had to avoid, and then spent the day in the forests above Mátraszele. On the evening of Wednesday – March 22 – in the valley of the Bárna stream, he reached Heves County, following the well-known pack of the local wolf family.

Before leaving Nógrád, he also passed in front of the cameras installed by our Directorate to monitor wolves. In one of the wildlife camera recordings, the collar beacon placed on the animal can also be clearly identified. The wolf marked in Switzerland  crossed Nógrád in three nights. As the crow flies, it is 69 km, which in reality is almost 100 km on four legs. Based on the tracks observed in the field, he stopped at the scent marks left by the local wolves, and it became clear to him that he had arrived in inhabited wolf territory. In the north-eastern part of Nógrád, his movement slowed down, but he still followed the packs used by the wolves.

Meadow eagle was photographed in Nagykanizsa – with Galery

Within the administrative area of Nagykanizsa, nature photographer István Szabados photographed meadow eagles. Despite the fact that we are talking about a highly protected species, the bald eagle has also slowly started to “urbanize”.

Thanks to a coincidence, it was observed by the first couple years ago in the forest area in the neighborhood of the city. At that time, he was walking his 14-year-old, Champion of Champions, mudi in a field. The old dog half-deafly, blindly searched for the mice in the tall grass. Meanwhile, high in the sky, three shadows circled above the dog, so that only the dog’s master perceived the threat.

Since eagles are always afraid of humans, no one was hurt. After that, camera in hand, he consciously observed eagles more and more often. He got to know the habits of the birds, their territory, and even found their nest, which is located approximately one kilometer from a road.

It is better to observe these wild birds in winter, when it is colder, because the birds strive to invest the minimum energy. There was also a case in the extreme cold that the bald eagle let the photographer get to 20 meters away. In summer, there is no chance of this, because the birds immediately fly away, in most cases they keep a distance of 200 meters. These large birds can be observed particularly well during the breeding season. In such cases, it is worth waiting in the cover of a bush, not far from their nest, so that you must not move even a millimeter, because the parent pair will notice even the slightest movement. You owe one of your memorable experiences to a young bird. After the young meadow eagle flew out of the nest, it flew just a few meters away in the nearby field. Presumably, the bird was so curious because this was the first time it had seen a human.

Since there is a significant population of dolman crows in the area, it is not uncommon for crows to annoy much larger birds of prey.

Crows are extremely smart, omnivorous birds, they always know where the limit is and when to retreat, because if they make a mistake, the eagle will not spare them. The birdlife around Nagykanizsa is gradually becoming more and more colorful.

In recent years, a pair of kestrels and a pair of peregrine falcons, which are believed to be nesting nearby, have appeared. So far, he has not been able to find the hawks’ nest. In the vicinity of the fish pond near Nagykanizsa, black storks also appeared, almost completely adapted to the conditions of the 21st century. They often hunt for bugs along the roads – birder István Szabados, amateur nature photographer, concluded his report.

New LIFE application in the Mura-Dráva-Danube Biosphere Reserve

Danube-Dráva National Park : Two years ago, UNESCO accepted the joint initiative of five neighboring countries – Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Serbia – to create a common protected area connecting the five countries.

Directorate of the Danube-Dráva National Park | Homepage

The national park originally planned jointly with Yugoslavia in the early 1990s could not be established due to the changes that occurred in the meantime, so the Danube-Dráva National Park was established in 1996 only on the territory of Hungary.

After the establishment of the Mura-Dráva-Danube Biosphere Reserve, the representatives of the partner countries decided that they did not want to get stuck in mere administrative cooperation, but instead tried to do something together to protect and rehabilitate the three rivers and their natural environment. As a result of this, the “LIFE RESTORE for MDD” tender idea was born in 2022, which the European Union qualified as worthy of support this year. The purpose of the tender is twofold: on the one hand, the maintenance of aquatic habitats and riverside groves through direct nature conservation interventions, and on the other hand, the strengthening of cooperation, the transfer of good practices and experiences between the bodies responsible for nature conservation of the five countries is also of particular importance. On behalf of the Hungarian state nature conservation, two management organizations are participating in the tender, along the Mura river, the Balaton-Felvidék National Park Administration, and in the case of the Drava and Danube rivers, the Danube-Dráva National Park Administration. The location of the biosphere reserve it can be viewed on this map . During the six-year tender, we are planning habitat restoration at three locations: along the Danube, in the area of the Bátai Backwaters, we would build a small bottom threshold, which would help retain the water in the wave field after the high tides have receded. In the case of the Dráva, we would remove the obstacles that impair the flow of water from two tributaries, so that the tributaries are again similar to the main channel. The water storage capacity of a marsh meadow near Drávaszentes would be increased, and trees alien to the landscape would be replaced with native ones.

Currently, the administrative part of the tender launch is taking place, the above activities will be implemented on schedule, starting in 2024.
