In a joint letter, the Hungarian, Polish, Slovak and Romanian prime ministers and the Bulgarian president asked Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to immediately take measures to deal with the unsustainable situation caused by increased grain imports from Ukraine, announced Agriculture Minister István Nagy.

He explained that the increased energy prices and input costs due to the Russo-Ukrainian war and the failed Brussels sanctions in response are also affecting European farmers very seriously. In the member states bordering Ukraine, including Hungary, all of this is compounded by unprecedented amounts of grain and oilseed imports that remain in these countries. In addition, Ukrainian agriculture, which enjoys full duty-free status, has begun to export large quantities of poultry, eggs and honey to the European market, which displaces Hungarian products from its traditional markets and lowers farmers’ sales prices below the level of production costs, he emphasized.

István Nagy said that seeing the helplessness of the Eastern European states and heads of government in Brussels, in their letter yesterday they are asking the president of the European Commission to immediately develop a complex package of measures, which includes immediate help for the affected farmers and the management of the root causes.

The minister also touched on the fact that in order to immediately help farmers who are having sales problems due to Ukrainian imports, they are calling for an increase in the amounts that can be used for extraordinary support by involving additional funds, because it is clear that the resources that can be used for this purpose within the framework of the Common Agricultural Policy and the national budgets cannot solve the situation management. Also, in order to deal with the situation in the short term, we ask the Commission to examine the possibility of the EU buying up for humanitarian purposes the stored grain grown in bordering member states and unsalable due to the drop in prices caused by imports. And in the field of trade policy, we recommend that if the market disturbances caused by imports cannot be avoided in any other way,

István Nagy emphasized that the Hungarian Government trusts that the European Commission will not forget Eastern European farmers when helping Ukraine, as it is neither expected nor fair that the price of the common solidarity provided by the 27 EU member states towards Ukraine should be paid by the bordering member states for agriculture. should be paid by its producers. It must be avoided that the same thing happens as in the case of sanctions, that is, that the EU causes more damage to itself and its agricultural producers than the amount of help that the customs-free admission of agricultural products by land means to Ukraine, he stated.

Nébih coordinates three seasonal food chain inspections every year, Balatonlellén, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture responsible for the food industry and trade policy, said. Dr. Márton Nobilis added that, in addition to the inspections related to spring and Christmas, the summer inspection is currently taking place, in the framework of which catering establishments around Lake Balaton receive special attention.

The National Food Chain Safety Office is a state organization with national competence responsible for supervising the safety of the Hungarian food chain (Figure: Nébih)

The state secretary explained that the focus of the inspection is the inspection of the hygienic condition of the restaurants and the traceability of the raw materials. Special attention is paid to the storage of raw materials that require cooling according to the regulations.

During the summer seasonal inspections, food safety inspectors have so far checked 32 beach bars around Lake Balaton. The specialists monitored the hygienic conditions of the establishments, the safety and traceability of the food prepared and distributed.

Dr. Márton Nobilis pointed out that the minor irregularities previously discovered by the experts were typically experienced in connection with the daily documentation management, as well as the lack of documentation proving the use of disinfectant dishwashing detergents and protection against pests. In two cases, it was only necessary to take action due to non-compliance with follow-up rules. Based on the inspections, it can be established that most of the buffets are clean, tidy and operate safely from a food hygiene point of view, he added.

Dr. Helik Ferenc, the deputy president of Nébih, confirmed that the aim of the authority is not to impose as many penalties as possible, but to ensure that customers and consumers have access to safe food in restaurants as well. After the beach buffets, the inspection that is about to start now affects restaurants operating around Lake Balaton. He also drew the attention of caterers to typical errors, such as the preservation of documents certifying the origin of the goods, or the proper storage of products that require refrigeration.

The World Organization for Animal Health announced important news

According to the relevant regulations of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), Hungary regained its freedom from highly pathogenic avian influenza. The favorable status for the entire country allows for unimpeded trade of live poultry and poultry products with individual third countries.

WOAH has officially confirmed our country’s freedom from highly pathogenic bird flu  on its website . The favorable classification is valid retroactively from June 28, so it already applies to poultry products made after that. The national chief veterinarian Dr. Szabolcs Pásztor informs the competent authorities of the partner countries about the exemption in an official letter in order to lift the import restrictions. It is important that with the recovery of our exemption, deliveries to third countries cannot start automatically, but must wait for their feedback.  Stakeholders can find up-to-date commercial information about third countries on the  Nébih website .

Franchi’s online catalog can be accessed here!

However, regaining the exemption does not mean that the epidemic prevention discipline can be relaxed. The virus is still present in wild birds, so there is a high risk that it will reappear in poultry flocks. That is why it is extremely important that livestock keepers comply with the minimum epidemic prevention conditions, thus minimizing the direct or indirect contact of poultry with wild birds. Currently, the provisions requiring feeding and drinking in covered places, preferably closed from the side, are still valid throughout the country. Feed and litter must be stored in a closed place, or the latter must be covered with foil so that wild birds cannot access it.

You can read information and current information about bird flu on the  thematic page of Nébih  .
